] Watchmen [

20080824

So I just recently finished reading
the entire Watchmen comic book.
I am odd in that I prefer to consume
things like books in one sitting.
Maybe because I like to get fully
into it.. and any pauses seem to
lessen the experience.

My end feelings were of
disappointment. The comic is highly
regarded and yet although I think it
is well put together what I was left
with in the end was a large empty
feeling. I've seen this before in
anime and manga.. a well executed
work with a shitty ending gets tons
of credit.. and I can't figure out
why.
The best metaphor I can create to
describe these occurrences is if
Da Vinci had painted a sixteen foot
oil painting of a big bloody severed
cock. It would be immaculate.. a
piece of history for sure.. and many
artisans could learn from the piece..
but It's just not anything I want
or care for.. I just don't need a
giant bloody severed cock anywhere in
my life..
Just as little I need a large and
well thought out comic describing
a solution to a nuclear catastrophe
that required SO much energy and
planning I just can't accept that
that would be the only solution.
Especially noting that you have
the super-hero equivalent to god
running around trying to help out.

I think that's what bugged me the
most.

Jon.. aka Dr. Manhattan.. is a blue
guy that can create anything..
destroy anything.. cannot be touched
or be destroyed.. can teleport
himself or anything he wants
instantly..
AND.. has a slight ability to see
into the future.
You think Veidt could have.. instead
of triggering ultimate destruction
by making Dr. Man' leave.. just
asked him to teleport around and
destroy all weapons..
you know..
for shits and giggles..

Night Owl.. Rorschach.. and what's-
her-face just don't matter.. even
the previous generation of heroes
don't matter a bit to the big
picture.
Sure there's ton of drama and
personal self doubt and the
interesting idea that what if
normal people went all Batman and
just tried their best to be heroes.

sigh..

Rorschach was my favorite character
though.. and in the end he MAY have
screwed everything up for Veidt for
a couple of days until he finds a
way to discredit the underground
news (which nobody really trusts)
and the journal left by Rorschach
(who nobody really trusts)...
Rorschach was simple.. he hated bad
people and punished them.. normally
by just killing them..
He was unbending in his faith that
the good are fine and the bad
must be pruned. He was uncomplicated
and enjoyable.. where it seemed
everyone else were either riddled
with self doubt and/or had some
over-complicated master plan.

I would recommend the comic to the
kind of people who can appreciate
the art in it. I would recommend it
to people who love comics.. (since
they most likely have already read it.)
I would recommend it to people
interested in making their own
comics since there is an extreme
depth to the whole universe.

I WOULD NOT recommend it to
the casual reader.. because at the end
of the day it wouldn't bring anything
to the table for them and there are
plenty of other outstanding comics I
could point them to instead.
