[C G P] ] Quake 4 Single Player [ So I just finished playing through Quake 4 the second time around. I just took the day to invest it all in Quake4. I felt that now that there is a good bot and that I have a computer that can run it at max settings the game can finally begin to be enjoyed. I must say I enjoyed it thoroughly. It didn't have any powerful plot twists and unforgettable characters which is more on par with Half Life 2, but it did have hours upon hours of mindless blasting strogg. I played it on normal and I must of died under 20 times for sure. Being able to run the better graphics added some spice to the game as well. I don't think the developers realized how bland the game gets without the extra shadows and detail everywhere. I found myself just stopping to admire the ridiculous detail that went into the textures and level design. One thing I picked up on was I kept noticing what might have been either pure chance.. or actual nods to other games. I noted the few "nods" and the closest thing I found to an Easter egg. Nods: - Quake 1 elevator In one of the levels there's a HUGE elevator. It goes down.. and while it is going down strogg jump down on you.. and when you get to the bottom you fight vores.. I mean quake 2 rocket chicks.. I mean Quake 4 teleporting chicks. - Lightening gun Yay! Well.. actually the gun sucked. - !Zombies OK actually that crap needs to stop. It was just fine for Q1 to have zombies.. because it was all Nine Inch Nails and gore and possessed demons.. but HL1? Wolfenstein?! Half life 2?!! I'm getting sick of it ok?! Anyway I felt that it was a nod to Quake 1. - Half Life 1 teleportes I noticed that SOME (not all) of the teleporters used a 2D ball sprite that looked VERY similar to the ones in Hald Life 1. Greenish balls of electricity.. and not even the BRIGHT NEON green teleporters that DooM had.. which would have been more appropriate. - Strogg strafe OK the scenario is there's a strogg running down the corridore at me and I fire a rocket at it.. and it does a full out sideways leap of incredible proportions. Which immediately triggered UNREAL SKAARJ STRAFE in my head. You see when Unreal decided to rear its ugly head (I should explain that sometime) it had these main bad dudes called Skaarj. If you read about the game you most assuredly were filled in about the Skaarj's amazing AI and how tough they were.. I explained their awesome AI as.. They were faster than other dudes.. and they could strafe... like off the whole damn screen.. its like they could fly or something! So you can understand how unimpressed I was by this. Anyway... Skaarj strafe nod it is. Easter Egg - Whistle while you work In some of the levels you can get REEEALY close to the repair bots.. When you do this listen.. you while hear them whistle a cute little happy tune.. It made me giggle. As a summary I would recommend this game to those who like mindless Quake-like blood fests. If you are looking for a deep plot or to take something truly memorable with you don't bother. Also only play it if you can run it at max.. as the game loses a ton without the good graphics.
